NANNY AND CAREGIVER FAQs:

What training or experience do live-in nannies & caregivers have? In addition to English language skills and the equivalent of a Canadian High School diploma, the caregiver must have at least six-months of training or at least one year's experience as a caregiver.

How long can I keep a live-in nanny or caregiver? Most are granted visas for three years, with the possibility of extension.

How long will it take for my nanny or caregiver to arrive? Our processing times are among the fastest anywhere, with most Nannies and Caregivers arriving in less than three months.

Must I provide meals and accommodations? Yes. Each nanny or caregiver must have a private furnished room within your home. Room and board may be deducted from the caregiver's salary.

What other obligations do I have? As an employer, you must offer employment of at least 44 hours per week at a minimum hourly rate prescribed by the provincial government ($9.62/hr in Alberta; $8.00 in BC; $10.00 in Saskatchewan). WBC and health care coverage is also provided to the caregiver. You must also pay for air-fare.

Can the caregiver leave and take a job somewhere else? No employee can be forced to stay in a job, however foreign workers may only work for the employer named in their work permit. The time and difficulty involved for an employee to change their work permit makes this scenario uncommon.

How can discount agencies offer low fees? Every agency must earn fees to stay in business. Some do not mention “special” processing or and extra fees that only come up later. Others charge recruitment fees to the nanny or caregiver themselves. There are two problems with this: 1) It is illegal, and may result in problems for both the agency and employer if found out, and 2) the agency is working for the benefit of one who pays them and if the employee is paying all or most of the fee, the agency will try to place them with employers whether they are good or not. We disclose all of our fees up front, and we never collect a fee from the nanny or caregiver.
